Brief Information About Me:
Ömer Faruk Türkoğlu M.D. Ph.D. was born in Ankara in 1968. After completing up high school in Ankara he was admitted to Hacettepe University Medical School in 1985 and graduated with honors in 1992. Upon his medical degree, he was admitted to the Neurosurgery Residence program at Hacettepe University and received his specialty in Neurosurgery in 2001.
During his residency years, he worked closely with Prof. Dr. Tuncalp Ozgen and Prof. Dr. Nejat Akalan especially on neurovascular microsurgery who received their training from Prof. Dr. M. Gazi Yaşargil, known as the father of microneurosurgery.
Dr.Türkoğlu collaborated with the Pharmaceutical Technology department of the same university and completed his research on “The efficiency of dexamethasone sodium phosphate-encapsulated chitosan microspheres after cold injury.” His residency thesis was on “The Comparision of Local and Controlled Release of Parenteral Dexamethasone on Experimental Vasogenic Edema.”
In the years 1999 and 2000, Dr. Türkoğlu attended a course in Germany by the founding president of Congress of International Neurosurgeons Prof. Dr. Majid Samii focusing on pontocerebellar angle tumors and skull base surgery. Dr. Türkoğlu was appointed as the chief operator of the neurosurgery clinic at Ankara Numune Training and Research Hospital in 2003. During these years, his research focused primarily on the effects of various agents on experimental spinal trauma. He supervised two thesis focused on neurotrauma. He received 4 different awards on the related work including Novartis Pharmaceutical Technology Research Awards, Second Place. He published over a dozen researches at known medical journals concerning experimental spinal trauma. Due to his focus on spinal trauma, Dr. Türkoğlu was appointed as a researcher to three other projects funded by Hacettepe University, Scientific Research Projects Coordination Unit, and The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey-TUBITAK Project.
In 2007 he was appointed as the chief operator at Ankara Ataturk Research and Training Hospital where he received his Associate Professor degree in 2011. In 2012, he was invited to work with Prof. Dr. Patrick Couvreur, director of the “Physico-Chimie, pharmacotechnie, biopharmacie” unit at Châtenay-Malabry in France. A known nano-oncologist Dr. Couvreur received the prestigious Host Madsen Medal, awarded by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP). They published an article concerning their research on “Squalenoyl adenosine nanoparticles provide neuroprotection after stroke and spinal cord injury”, in one of the most prestigious journals – Nature Nanotechnology in 2014 (Impact Factor: 38.048, 49 citations up to date). The same year he published an article in the British Journal of Neurosurgery on “Effects of tadalafil — Type-V phosphodiesterase enzyme inhibitor — on rats with spinal trauma.” His published works up to date have received 177 citations.
As of November 2021, Prof. Dr. Türkoğlu has published 40 articles in international journals within the scope of SCI/SCI-E and SSCI/AHCI, and 8 articles in national journals outside these scopes; There are 40 international full-text scientific studies in total. According to the criteria determined by YÖK (Council of Higher Education), he has 33 abstracts or full-text studies published in international scientific meetings and 67 text studies in national scientific meetings.
studies in national scientific meetings. He took part in 2 completed or ongoing scientific projects supported by national organizations.
Dr. Türkoğlu has worked on 3 scientific projects with TÜBİTAK (The Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey) and currently has a TÜBİTAK 1001 project ongoing focusing on the formation of neuroprotective nanoformulations. He has also supervised 3 residency theses, focusing on neuroprotective agents on the spinal cord and brain along with transsphenoidal pituitary adenoma surgeries.
Prof. Dr. Türkoğlu continues to work on his research while training young neurosurgeons on the same subject. He also continues to work full-time at Ankara City Hospital which is affiliated to the University of Health Sciences. The hospital is 3rd largest hospital in the world. Ankara City Hospital, which was established on an area of 674000 square meters, has a bed capacity of 3810; one of the most major hospitals of world performing over 1800 neurosurgery operations a year. There are 1011 outpatient clinics and 131 operating rooms. There is an intensive care unit with 696 beds.
His operations consist mostly of central nervous system malignancies including glioblastoma, meningioma, schwannoma, and pituitary adenomas. It is also a vital trauma center thus a big portion of spinal trauma along with degenerative spinal disorders is routinely operated with instrumentation. He is also a vital member of the teaching staff giving lectures to neurosurgery residents.
Dr. Türkoğlu has operated on over 200 pituitary adenomas. These patients are managed by a team of neurosurgeons, intensive care unit specialist, ENT specialist and endocrinologist for a close follow up post operatively.
Especially pituitary surgery is one of the surgeries that he is experienced and interested in. 120 of them are endoscopic, 80 of them are microscopically applied.
Outside of the hospital Dr. Türkoğlu cooperates with the national Turkish Neurosurgical Society taking multiple roles in the neurooncology surgery and education group along with neurointensive care unit education. He continues to work multidisciplinary with other clinics in order to provide the best treatment modality and follow up for all his patients.
Dr. Türkoğlu and his team have published over 30 articles in international and national journals. He has authored over 100 presentations in worldwide conferences. Attending over 100 conferences and workshops nationally and internationally, he keeps up to date on the latest advancements along with updates on cases and researches conducted at hospitals all over the world.
Dr. Türkoğlu is a father of two and is fluent in English and Turkish. Along with all the technical specifications his belief in classical methodology has not diminished – be a good listener, have good bedside manners and work as a team.
